Composer
Violeta Parra (1917-1967) was a pivotal figure in Chilean folk music, known for her profound influence on Latin American music and culture. A poet, visual artist, and singer-songwriter, Parra was a key figure in the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement, which blended traditional folk music with socially conscious lyrics. Her song “Gracias a la Vida,” written in 1966, is one of her most iconic works and has become a timeless anthem of gratitude and reflection. The song is a deeply personal tribute to life’s beauty and complexity, celebrating the joys and sorrows that shape human experience. Its universal message, conveyed through Parra’s simple yet powerful lyrics, has resonated across cultures, inspiring numerous artists around the world to cover the song. Despite its uplifting tone, “Gracias a la Vida” also reflects Parra’s own struggles, making it both a song of celebration and poignant introspection.

Song Lyrics
Madre amigo hermano y luz alumbrando
